| Migration | Joseph Spriggs, together with his wife and four children, boarded the SS Confiance in Liverpool and sailed on 8 December 1852.Four months later, on 12 April 1853, they disembarked at the port of Geelong, in Australia. They arrived during the midst of the first Australian gold-rush.
Gold was discovered in south-eastern Australia in 1851. By October that year, Geelong, the nearest port to the gold-fields, was almost deserted with people leaving their homes and jobs and heading inland to the new goldfields. Fortune-seekers began arriving from overseas in late 1852 and by 1853 great ships crammed with prospectors arrived from British ports almost daily.
A remarkably detailed account of this journey in given in Coy. |
